The Ribbon Series — Paul DeVisser + Jayban
Bound in Colour explores the shifting relationship between freedom, restraint and transformation.
The ribbons begin almost innocently — loose, colourful and gathered around the figure. As the series progresses, they climb, twist and accumulate, gradually changing from decoration into something more ambiguous: clothing, armour, restraint, or a second skin.
That transformation creates a tension that runs throughout the work. Softness meets strength. Playfulness gives way to stillness. The body is simultaneously concealed and revealed.
Created in collaboration with Jayban, the series deliberately leaves the final interpretation unresolved. The ribbons can represent the identities we construct, the expectations placed upon us, the things that protect us, or the things from which we eventually need to break free.
Ultimately, Bound in Colour is less about the ribbons themselves than the figure emerging from within them.
